STATE COMMANDER ERICKSON'S MOTHER PASSES AWAY

Irene M. Erickson
Irene M. Erickson, age 84 of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster, WI following a brief illness. 
 
     Irene is survived by five children: Gary (Lana) Erickson, Lancaster; Tom (Marita) Erickson, Tacoma, WA; Connie (Steve) Reinsbach and Pat (Graydon) Hall all of Lancaster; and Julie (Kevin) Atkinson, Cuba City; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.  She is also survived by her three sisters: Mary Luella Place, Lancaster;  Evelyn (Philip)Peterson, Lindsberg, KS;  Jane Duve, Grand Blanc, MI; and two brothers: Ivan (Jean Ann) Duve, Shelby, MT; and Eugene “Red” (Marilyn) Duve, Independence, MO. 
 
     Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.  Burial will be in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends may call on Saturday, January 10, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Past State Commander George Arndt Dies

It is with sadness that we report the death of Past State Commander George H. Arndt.
George was State Commander 1992-93 for the VFW, Department of Wisconsin.
At the time of his death, he and his wife Sonja were living in Warrenton, MO, where he was a Life Member of Post 5077.
A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date.

Wisconsin Veterans Museum Loses Longtime Director to Cancer

(MADISON) – Dr. Richard Zeitlin, longtime director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, passed away late Wednesday, December 3 in Madison, after a short battle with cancer.

Wisconsin Secretary of Veterans Affairs John A. Scocos, who is currently serving with the U.S. Army Reserves in Iraq, said by phone, “Last night, I lost a good friend of more than 20 years and Wisconsin lost a state treasure with the passage of Rich Zeitlin, the longtime director of Wisconsin’s Veterans Museum, whose vision led to the development of today’s extraordinary museum on the premier State Street corner of the Capitol Square in downtown Madison.”

Ladies Auxiliary Loses Beloved Past Department President

Leone Morrissey, a life-long member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1318, passed away last week at the age of 91.

She served as Department President from 1968 to 1969, and afterward continued to serve in many active roles at the State, District and Post levels.

She loved the Auxiliary and her creativity and ingenuity enabled her to contribute uniquely and productively over the years. Leone was also active in church and other community affairs.

Visitation will take place today from 3:00 to 6:00pm at Cress Funeral Home in Madison, and the funeral is tomorrow, Friday, May 9th, at 10:00am.

She is survived by a large and loving family. Leone will be missed by her VFW Sisters statewide.

State Flags at Half Staff in Honor Of Lance Corporal Dean Opicka

EXECUTIVE ORDER # 247
 

Relating to a Proclamation that the Flag of the United States and the Flag of the State of Wisconsin be Flown at Half-Staff as a Mark of Respect for Lance Corporal Dean Opicka of the United States Marine Corps Reserve Who Lost His Life During Operation Iraqi Freedom



WHEREAS, on April 14, 2008, Lance Corporal Dean Opicka, a member of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, United States Marine Corps Reserve, died while serving his country in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Dean Opicka provided faithful and honorable service to the people of the State of Wisconsin and the people of the United States; and

WHEREAS, the people of Wisconsin mourn the death of Lance Corporal Dean Opicka; and

WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Dean Opicka will be laid to rest on Thursday, April 24, 2008;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JIM DOYLE, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, by the authority vested in me by Federal and State law, do hereby order that the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Wisconsin shall be flown at half-staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the State of Wisconsin equipped with such flags beginning at sunrise on April 24, 2008, and ending at sunset on that date.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Wisconsin to be affixed.  Done at the Capitol in the City of Madison this twenty-first day of April, in the year two thousand and eight.
