Wisconsin WebCOM Switches to New Site, Format

Posted at 08:39 AM on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 by VFW Posts: Wisconsin

The VFW Department of Wisconsin, working with the great folks at WebCOM, have signed on to a brand new website under WebCOM's new flagship service, MyVFW.org. The new concept, which is a logical outgrowth of the original Distributed Management Weblog Network concept, has made a quantum leap in the ability of a large VFW Department, like Wisconsin, to provide unprecedented tools and access to its members and member Posts.

To the regular "user", the new site addresses virtually all of the problems and criticisms of the original Wisconsin WebCOM system. Dan Romauld, Technical Manager of the company's internet projects, says "This new MyVFW.org network is what we have been working toward for many years. Only in the last year or so have the tools that make this network possible become available." Those tools include software that enables us to have a state-of-the-art site that will provide access to all levels of the organization in a structured, decentralized management model.

Unlike traditional, older-style sites, the new network is a collaborative effort that clears away the necessary bottlenecks of a traditional website/webmaster system. Our network is managed by ten District web administrators, each responsible for their own area of subscribing Posts, and overseen by a chief Web Administrator for the Department. Department Administrator Bill Knudson commented that under the new structure, management is more effectively distributed across the system. "If something happens to one Admin person, we have back ups who can step in and keep things going. Also, the District Admins will know their Post Admins better, and keep cultivating a growing cadre of members who can keep building the system," Knudon said. "A smart-thinking Post will take advantage of this great opportunity. Our organization is positioned now to provide outstanding levels of current, active and useful information throughout their communities."

The system is making its debut this week. As time goes on, more and more features will come to light, including free Classified Advertising for members, to post everything from Vet-friendly Job Opportunities to items for sale. Business advertising from local businesses will also bring cash into Posts and the Department. The current "Google" ads that may be seen on the network are what help to underwrite the operating costs for WebCOM. The entire system is provided at no cost to the Department, thanks to those little ads. Posts should consider procuring local businesses whose ad revenue would be shared with the Post, the Department and with WebCOM, who would replace the Google "fillers" in the available ad slots.

For the first time, we will now host websites for the Mens Auxiliaries and the Military Order of the Cootie, Wisconsin Grand. The new VFW of Wisconsin site also links to the new website of the Wisconsin VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Posts, and Districts, all have their own Calendars to post information about meetings and events, plus the ability to make custom maps for meeting locations or other events. If you, or your Post, would like to know more about activating your new Post Website, please Contact Bill "Knoot" Knudon, or the designated Web Admin for your District.

"It's only going to get better", says Knudson. "What you're seeing today is just the bare bones of an amazing package. Watch what's coming down the pike as we get more time to perfect the system."
