VA Recognizes “Presumptive” Illnesses in Iraq, Afghanistan

Posted at 10:10 PM on Thursday, March 18, 2010 by District 9 Web Admin

WASHINGTON (March 18, 2010) – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki today announced the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking steps to make it easier for Veterans to obtain disability compensation for certain diseases associated with service in the Persian Gulf War or Afghanistan.  This will be the beginning of historic change for how VA considers Gulf War Veterans’ illnesses.

Following recommendations made by VA’s Gulf War Veterans Illnesses Task Force, VA is publishing a proposed regulation in the Federal Register that will establish new presumptions of service connection for nine specific infectious diseases associated with military service in Southwest Asia during the Persian Gulf War, or in Afghanistan on or after September 19, 2001.

FRAUD ALERT: Phony E-mail Message Seeks Travel Assistance

Posted at 01:01 PM on Friday, March 12, 2010 by District 9 Web Admin

The e-mail reproduced below is a SCAM. You could receive one like it appearing to be from someone you know.

DO NOT RESPOND to this type of message. It is a complete fraud and has been used in numerous instances. The example below was received by VFW members in Connecticut. The person in the "From" line is a legitimate member, but his e-mail address was hijacked and the fake message sent out to numerous individuals, usually from his own mailing list.

If you receive one appearing to be from someone you know, alert that person to this fraudulent use of his/her email address.

Hello,
Sorry I didn't inform you about my traveling to UK for a Seminar, am presently in London. I am stranded here because i misplaced my wallet and other valuable things, personal items such as cash, credit cards and identification document on my way to the hotel.

I will like you to assist me urgently with the sum of $2,500 Us Dollars to sort-out my hotel bills and get myself back home. I will appreciate whatever you can afford; I’ll pay you back as soon as I return.

I had no option than to send you an e-mail since I have exceeded my spending limit in the hotel and I have no money to call you. It will cost me 80 pounds to make/receive phone calls and I don't have such money right now. I can only contact you through my e-mail for now.

It's impossible for me to access my bank account from here, which is why I need your help. The safest and fastest way for you to help me out is by sending the money through the Western Union .

So I will really appreciate whatever you can afford and I promise to pay you back as soon as I return, kindly let me know if you can be of help? So that I can send you the Details which you will use when sending the money to me through Western Union , Please try and make it confidential. I need the money because i am stranded, I will return it to you as soon as i return home soon.

Thanks.
