VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS - BROWN COUNTY COUNCIL HELD MEETING SEPTEMBER 21, 2009

Brown County VFW Council

Meeting Minutes

September 21, 2009

 

Commander Al Malewiski held opening ceremonies at Duck Creek Post 7534 at 2000 hours; followed by salute to colors, opening prayer and pledge of allegiance.

 

GUESTS PRESENT: Steve Conto, 8th District Commander, Elmer Uhlig, Cootie Grand Chaplain and Emett Erdmann, Cootie of the Year and Cootie 4th District Commander.

 

ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS:  9 present, 1 absent, 0 excused. 15 total members present.

 

ROLL CALL OF POSTS: Five posts were present: Ashwaubenon, Duck Creek, DePere, Denmark, and Pulaski.  There were numerous activities performed by the posts present, covering the period from  August 4, 2009 – October 21, 2009 representing 702 hours, 48 members, 5,741 miles and approximately $6,947 by the  posts present for the good of the organization and veterans. (Details on file with adjutant) Three posts were absent: Suamico, Bellevue, Green Bay and Oneida. We would appreciate your activity reports for each quarter at the meetings and if your post is unable to be represented at the meeting send your reports to the adjutant, Bruce Sorensen, 2113 Rainbow Dr., Green Bay, WI. 54313-7804 or e-mail them to: bsorensen@new.rr.com.

 

READING OF THE MINUTES: Minutes of August 4, 2009 meeting were read and approved.

 

QUARTERMASTER REPORT: Beginning balance $1,070.28. Ending balance $1,058.28.

MMSC to approve the QM report.

The audit for the Quarter ending September 30, 2009 will be performed by the trustees following the meeting.

It is not too early for posts to begin planning to pay their $10.00 dues assessment for the VFW year 2009-2010.  Send dues to QM, Patrick J. Moran, 1225 Suburban Drive, DePere, WI 54115-1829.

 

COMRADES IN DISTRESS: Please keep the following comrades in your prayers. Wilbert Brey is doing a little better; he is attending the upcoming Veterans Day banquet at Denmark Post. Don Johnson is receiving treatments for cancer.

 

DRAPING OF THE CHARTER: Charter was draped for Bob Little.

 

MEMBERSHIP:  There is one BCC posts who has reached 100%; as of this meeting: Oneida Post has reached 107.69%. The Council is 119 members short of 100% at this meeting.

The 9 Council posts ended the year as of October 21, 2009 as follows:

Green Bay at 83.12% - 40 short                       DePere at 92.31% - 12 short

Denmark at 91.3% - 8 short                             Duck Creek at 92.38% - 16 short

Oneida at 107.69% - 6 over                          Suamico at 83.02% - 9 short

Bellevue at 85.96% - 24 short                          Pulaski at 94.25% - 5 short

Ashwaubenon at 87.36% - 11 short

 

REPORTING: The goal for Posts in the BCC is to report in all required activities this year which can be found in Commander Wilfred “Twiggy” Johnson’s commanders manual. The reporting form has not changed and can be accessed by going on-line to the website. If you submit your reports on-line please print a copy for your records.

The following Posts in the Council are showing reporting activity as of this meeting in the Post Action reporting summary on the website: 6705 Denmark, 7534 Duck Creek, 9677 Bellevue and 10244 Ashwaubenon.

 

NATIONAL HOME REMEMBERED @ 2024 HOURS

 

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Commander Al reported on the following issues:

Ø      Thank you to the posts representing the Brown County Council who attended the District Meeting and C of A. 24 of 37 District posts attended the District meeting.

Ø      Thanks those comrades who attended National Commander in Chief Tommy T. Tradewell’s Homecoming.

Ø      Urged comrades and posts to purchase State Raffle tickets.

Ø      The Brown County Fair was a good experience and the tickets were free. Look forward to attending next year.

Ø      Urged posts in the council to report their activities using the on-line post action reporting system.

Ø      National Home Halloween party is October 23-25. Missouri is host department this year.

 

Dave Behrend reported on the status of the VA Clinic site selection process. No site decision has been made as yet.

 

The Loyalty Day event update was given. All Council posts are urged to get involved as the last time it was close to this area was when it was at New London back in the early 1970’s. Posts are urged to get parade participants from their communities and/or purchase an advertisement for the  Loyalty Day book. The forms are on the website or contact Don Johnson, Bruce Sorensen or Dave Behrend.

 

The National Organization has removed all references to County Councils from the by-laws. The Departments could follow suit as well as the Districts. This does not mean that the posts that make up the BCC need to disband. It is up to the 9 posts.

 

Roger Karcz thanked those posts and comrades who attended the Pulaski Polka Days parade this year. They appreciate it when other posts and comrades show up to celebrate the event. Roger also spoke about the Veterans – Sportsman’s Banquet to be held at Romy’s Holiday Inn at Kelly Lake on November 2, 2009 sponsored by Pulaski Post 9719. There are a lot of raffle prizes to be won.

 

NEW BUSINESS: The State Bowling tournament will be held in Merrill sponsored by Merrill Post 1638.

There is a WWII veteran of Post 2113 and 7534 going on the next Glory Honor Flight to Washinton DC to view the memorial.

Dave Behrend reported that there is a member of the military in Iraq who is trying to promote having chocolate sent to military members overseas. For additional information contact Dave.

 

Pulaski post member Tom Rymer was recently recognized for being the top recruiter of new members for the DAV.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER: Steve Conto reported that the 8th District is doing OK so far in membership. 15 of 37 district posts have submitted post action reports.

 

The last district meeting saw over 50% of the district posts present which meet the by-laws criteria. It is important for all posts to attend district meetings so that they stay current with VFW organization information so that they can be accountable and responsible as a post within the organization.

 

There will be dues roundup October 7 at Pulaski and Appleton and October 8 in Ashwaubenon.

 

Steve will be inspecting the Brown County Council following the meeting.

 

He urged posts to publish their events on the 8th District website by the sending the information to himself or Mike Borg.

 

Pat Moran reminded posts that their 990 forms for 2009 are due by November 15, 2009.

 

January 31, 2010 the 8th District meeting will be held at Ashwaubenon Post 10244.

April 17, 2010 the 8th District meeting will be held at Appleton Post 2778.

 

MMSC: to adjourn at 2115 hours. The next Brown County VFW Council meeting will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2009 at Ashwaubenon Post 10244 @ 2000 hours. (Mark your calendars!)

 

The 50/50 raffle was won by Thomas Kazik.
