8TH DISTRICT TO HOLD A DEPARTMENT DUES ROUND-UP PROGRAM

OUR DISTRICT HAS BEEN ASK BY DEPARTMENT'S CHIEF OF STAFF AND THE STATE COMMANDER TO CONDUCT A DUES ROUND-UP. WE HAVE ARRANGED FOR THREE POSTS OF OUR DISTRICT TO BE HOST SITES. THEY ARE PULASKI VFW POST 9719, APPLETON VFW POST 2778 AND ASHWAUBENON VFW POST 10244. MANY THANKS GOES TO THESE POSTS FOR HOSTING THIS DUES ROUND-UP ACTIVITIES.
OUR DUES ROUND-UP REPRESENTATIVE WILL BE WALLY HOGAN, PAST NATIONAL COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF WHO WILL BE VISITING THESE SITES (SEE SCHEDULE BELOW) TO DISCUSS MEMBERSHIP. WALLY WILL BE HANDING OUT TO THE POSTS THEIR UNPAID CONTINUOUS MEMBERS LIST AND I HAVE ASKED WALLY TO HAND OUT THE OLD MIP'S LIST AS WELL FOR OUR AREA. DISCUSSION WILL FOCUS ON MEMBERSHIP, BUT OTHER PERTINENT DEPARTMENT BUSINESS ISSUES CAN BE ADDRESSED AS WELL.
FOR THOSE POST'S THAT HAVEN'T ATTENDED A STATE OR NATIONAL CONVENTIONS RECENTLY - HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO ASK QUESTIONS OF OUR PAST NATIONAL COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF WALLY HOGAN. WALLY WILL ALSO BE FOCUSING ON WHAT POSTS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED DURING THE RECENT MONTHS. THIS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO ENRICH YOUR POST'S RECRUITING EFFORTS AND TALK DIRECTLY TO DEPARTMENT TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.

PRESENT THEM TO OUR ROUND-UP DUES REPRESENTATIVE WALLY HOGAN DURING YOUR ATTENDANCE. SHOW THAT YOUR POST'S IS SUPPORTER OF THE VFW MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM AT DEPARTMENT.

Department Service Officer Vacancy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The VFW Department of Wisconsin has an opening for the position of Department Service Officer at the VA Regional Office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Candidates for the position must be eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The Service Officer manages a staff in providing professional representation for veterans seeking federal, hospital benefits. The individual should have advanced human relations and management skills, to enable them to serve as liaison with various governmental agencies, supervision and training of office staff, and coordination and dissemination of information on veteran’s benefits throughout our VFW membership.
This individual provides advice and technical assistance based on knowledge of mental and physical illnesses and disabilities. An Associates Degree in Medical Technology or experience in adjudicating medical claims with insurance carriers is desirable.
Skill is required interpreting and disseminating information about Title 38 USC and Department of Veterans Affairs policies, court decisions, and government statutes, Title 38 CFR regulations, directives and publications.
Computer knowledge to include software applications and case management techniques and other office machine applications used in a fully automated office is essential.
Salary commensurate (based on experience), but not less than $30,000. Benefits include: VFW retirement plan, life insurance and health insurance.

Holiday Mailing Deadlines for Military Delivery

Recommended Mailing Dates to APO/FPO AddressesWASHINGTON — For military service members stationed around the globe, holiday gifts are a big morale boost. To help the families and friends of U.S. military personnel, the Postal Service offers a discount on its largest Priority Mail Flat Rate box.
The recommended mailing date for the most economical postage to overseas military installations, including Iraq and Afghanistan, is Nov. 13.
Mail sent to overseas military addresses is charged only domestic mail prices. The domestic mail price for the Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box is $13.95, but for packages to APO/FPO addresses overseas the price is reduced to $11.95. Additional discounts are available for customers printing their Priority Mail postage labels online at Click-N-Ship.
Flat-Rate boxes are free at any Post Office, or can be ordered online at shop.usps.com. Postage, labels and customs forms can be printed online any time using Click-N-Ship.
The Postal Service continues to show support to those serving in the armed forces by offering free Military Care Kits, designed specifically for military families sending packages overseas. The mailing kits can be ordered by phone by calling 1-800-610-8734 and asking for the Care Kit. Each kit includes two “America Supports You” large Priority Mail Flat-Rate boxes, four medium-sized Priority Mail Flat-Rate boxes, six Priority Mail labels, one roll of Priority Mail tape and six customs forms with envelopes.

To ensure delivery of holiday cards and packages by Dec. 25 to military APO/FPO addresses overseas, the Postal Service recommends that mail for service members be entered no later than the mailing dates listed below. Mail addressed to military post offices overseas is subject to certain conditions or restrictions regarding content, preparation and handling. APO/FPO addresses generally require customs forms. Meeting Minutes
September 21, 2009
Commander Al Malewiski held opening ceremonies at Duck Creek Post 7534 at 2000 hours; followed by salute to colors, opening prayer and pledge of allegiance.
GUESTS PRESENT: Steve Conto, 8th District Commander, Elmer Uhlig, Cootie Grand Chaplain and Emett Erdmann, Cootie of the Year and Cootie 4th District Commander.
ROLL CALL OF OFFICERS: 9 present, 1 absent, 0 excused. 15 total members present.
QUARTERMASTER REPORT: Beginning balance $1,070.28. Ending balance $1,058.28.
MMSC to approve the QM report.
The audit for the Quarter ending September 30, 2009 will be performed by the trustees following the meeting.
It is not too early for posts to begin planning to pay their $10.00 dues assessment for the VFW year 2009-2010. Send dues to QM, Patrick J. Moran,
COMRADES IN DISTRESS: Please keep the following comrades in your prayers. Wilbert Brey is doing a little better; he is attending the upcoming Veterans Day banquet at Denmark Post. Don Johnson is receiving treatments for cancer.
DRAPING OF THE CHARTER: Charter was draped for Bob Little.
MEMBERSHIP: There is one BCC posts who has reached 100%; as of this meeting: Oneida Post has reached 107.69%. The Council is 119 members short of 100% at this meeting.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Commander Al reported on the following issues:
Ø Thank you to the posts representing the Brown County Council who attended the District Meeting and C of A. 24 of 37 District posts attended the District meeting.
Ø Thanks those comrades who attended National Commander in Chief Tommy T. Tradewell’s Homecoming.
Ø Urged comrades and posts to purchase State Raffle tickets.
Ø The Brown County Fair was a good experience and the tickets were free. Look forward to attending next year.
Ø Urged posts in the council to report their activities using the on-line post action reporting system.
Ø National Home Halloween party is October 23-25.
Dave Behrend reported on the status of the VA Clinic site selection process. No site decision has been made as yet.
The Loyalty Day event update was given. All Council posts are urged to get involved as the last time it was close to this area was when it was at
The National Organization has removed all references to County Councils from the by-laws. The Departments could follow suit as well as the Districts. This does not mean that the posts that make up the BCC need to disband. It is up to the 9 posts.
Roger Karcz thanked those posts and comrades who attended the Pulaski Polka Days parade this year. They appreciate it when other posts and comrades show up to celebrate the event. Roger also spoke about the Veterans – Sportsman’s Banquet to be held at Romy’s Holiday Inn at
NEW BUSINESS: The State Bowling tournament will be held in Merrill sponsored by Merrill Post 1638.

Dave Behrend reported that there is a member of the military in
Pulaski post member Tom Rymer was recently recognized for being the top recruiter of new members for the DAV.
GOOD OF THE ORDER: Steve Conto reported that the 8th District is doing OK so far in membership. 15 of 37 district posts have submitted post action reports.
The last district meeting saw over 50% of the district posts present which meet the by-laws criteria. It is important for all posts to attend district meetings so that they stay current with VFW organization information so that they can be accountable and responsible as a post within the organization.
There will be dues roundup October 7 at Pulaski and
Steve will be inspecting the Brown County Council following the meeting.
He urged posts to publish their events on the 8th District website by the sending the information to himself or Mike Borg.
Pat Moran reminded posts that their 990 forms for 2009 are due by November 15, 2009.
January 31, 2010 the 8th District meeting will be held at Ashwaubenon Post 10244.
April 17, 2010 the 8th District meeting will be held at Appleton Post 2778.
MMSC: to adjourn at 2115 hours. The next Brown County VFW Council meeting will be held Wednesday, January 20, 2009 at Ashwaubenon Post 10244 @ 2000 hours. (Mark your calendars!)
