Burke VFW Post 5412 Participates in Clifton Day 2009

Posted at 18:33 on Monday, October 19, 2009 by Post5412 in Post 5412

On Sunday, October 11th, Burke VFW Post 5412 Commander Dave Meyers, pictured below with one of the Post's newest members Robert "Bob" Lindholm, hosted a recruiting table at Clifton Day 2009.  The Clifton Day Festival is held annually in the town of Clifton, VA--just down the road from Burke.  It's a non-profit and family-oriented event described in detail on-line at http://www.cliftonday.com/

In addition to the beautiful weather, the Post's efforts were rewarded by the recruitment of four new and two transfer members.

VFW Post 5412 Participates in the 32nd Annual Burke Centre Festival

Posted at 18:50 on Sunday, September 20, 2009 by Post5412 in Post 5412

Burke VFW Post 5412 participated, once again, in the annual Burke Centre Festival on 12-13 September 2009.  This event is the largest and most intense on the Post's annual calendar.  We set up and staff a community service booth throughout the two-day festival, welcome attendees on behalf of the VFW and the Burke community, offer voter registration, hold two drawings for home flag kits, and, of course, work to recruit new Post members.   Nearly 10,000 visitors have been tallied in past festivals, and this year the community may well have exceeded that number.  In addition, we received several distinguished visitors this year, including Congressman Gerry Connolly, who voiced his strong support for the veterans, our Post, and all we do.   Here is a photograph of the Post's booth.

This year, six Post 5412 members worked long and hard over the two days.  We were pleased to be joined by two Department of Virginia recruiters on Saturday as well.  Over the two days, our recruiting effort was very successful.  The final tally is not yet available, but a rough count shows twenty new members and five members transferred from their former Posts.  In addition, nearly a dozen other qualified individuals showed interest in joining but weren't ready to commit on-the-spot, so they were provided with Post information, applications, and POCs so we can follow-up.  Here's a photo to prove that we recruit members from all conflicts:

Actually, under all that Federation armor is a USMC veteran of several recent earthly conflicts and now one of our newest Post members--he was entertaining Festival attendees along with his current "commander," Darth Vader.  Also pictured (and eyeballing that slick laser pistol) is Past Post Commander and Trustee Tom Troy.

Altogether, we think our efforts at the 2009 Burke Centre Festival not only were fun--thanks to the beautiful weather this weekend--but also among the most rewarding the Post ever has had.

Burke VFW Post 5412 Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

Posted at 19:11 on Monday, June 1, 2009 by Post5412 in Post 5412

Once again this year the Burke VFW Post 5412 Memorial Day Ceremony was a success.  Held on the Burke Centre Conservancy grounds on Burke Centre Parkway in Burke, VA, the ceremony was attended by many residents, including active duty military from as far away as Alexandria, VA, retired and former military members, spouses, family, and other residents of the area.  The Keynote Address was given by former Virginia State Senator Jay O'Brien.  Additional remarks were made by Virginia State Senator Ken Cuccinelli, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Sharon Bulova, and Braddock District Supervisor John Cook.  The Boy Scouts assisted the Post 5412 Color Guard with the opening ceremony.  Vocalist Rachel Goldman-Gorbut, Piper Norm Weaver and Bugler Elmer Savilla all lent their considerable talents to help Post Commander Dave Meyers make this one of the most memorable ceremonies we've held.  Some photos of the opening ceremony, our distinguished guests, and the Burke VFW Post 5412 tribute to veterans at the Burke Centre Conservancy flagpole (originally donated by the Post) are shown.
