VFW Urges Military Veterans' Community to Vote

‘Veterans matter, veterans care, veterans vote,’ says national commander.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2008--The national commander of the nation’s oldest major veterans’ organization is urging more than 50 million Americans in the military veterans’ community to get out and vote this November.

“We represent one of the largest voting blocs in the nation, but our calls to action on Capitol Hill and in the White House are meaningless if we don’t make our voices heard and our votes count,” said Glen Gardner, the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

Both Republican and Democratic candidates for president, and those running for House and Senate seats, are heavily courting the military vote this year. At stake nationally are more than 50 million votes from a military voting bloc of 23.5 million veterans, 2.2 million uniformed personnel and their families, despite national polls that would suggest the military vote is statistically even politically and ideologically.

Three CNN/Gallup/USA Today polls taken during the 2004 presidential campaign revealed that 47 percent of America’s veterans aligned themselves politically as Republican, 42 percent as Democrat and 11 percent as Independent. Ideologically, they identified themselves as 43 percent conservative, 43 percent moderate and 16 percent liberal. More important, however, is the fact 74 percent of veterans voted in the 2004 presidential election compared to 63 percent of the general population, according the the U.S. Census Bureau.

“The military veterans’ vote matters because we are traditionally strong on national defense, homeland security, and people programs that take care of our nation’s veterans, military personnel and their families,” explained Gardner, a Vietnam veteran from Round Rock, Texas.

The VFW national commander has encouraged his 2.2 million members to wear their VFW or Auxiliary caps to political campaign rallies as a visible reminder that the veterans’ vote counts. What he does not want is for the national organization to be perceived as politically partisan or supportive of one candidate over another.

“The VFW is a nonprofit veterans’ service organization that is prohibited from endorsing political candidates,” he explained, “but our membership has free rein as Americans to campaign and vote for the candidates of their choice. They have a vested interest – a duty – to ensure that everyone knows that veterans matter, veterans care and veterans vote.”

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. Invite VFW Members to Honor Fallen Heroes

 North Carolina Blue Star Mothers Triad-Piedmont Chapter 3 invites you to be our honored guest at our Blue to Gold Service to honor the families of our Fallen Heroes on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Westover Church, located at 505 Muir’s Chapel Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27410. 

 President George W. Bush signed a proclamation on September 21, 2007 designating a day of  recognition for Blue Star Mothers of America to honor Gold Star Mothers and their families of our Fallen Heroes across the United States of America. Blue Star Mothers of America is a national service and outreach organization, charted by the United States Congress in June of 1960. Blue Star Mothers of America is non-partisan and has no particular religious affiliation.  We are outreach and service organizations in communities all across America. The sole mission of each BSM Chapter is to serve any and all of our military troops and their families. A Blue Star Mother is a Mother of a son or daughter who is presently serving active duty or has had a son or daughter that has served and has been honorably discharged from any branch of our military branches. A Gold Star Mother is a mother who’s son or daughter has come home as a Fallen Hero.

Gubernatorial Video Forum
These neutral, non-partisan, not-for-profit forums are part of  an ongoing effort to engage our membership, our deployed military community and our state's voters in the democratic process .
The VFW NC will be asking questions of the Candidates on behalf of our membership over the course of the 2008 Elections.
Candidates are asked to take the opportunity to personally reply via video to the following questions.

1. Do you support special state funding for all North Carolina Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, so that they receive free tuition, fees, and books to any state university or community college for a period of four years or until they receive their bachelor's degree, whichever is less? 

2. Do you support the creation of a Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in the state executive branch that is a department in the cabinet directly under the Governor, as opposed to the current Directorate of Veterans Affairs under the Department of Administration? 

3. Do you support no-fee hunting and fishing licenses for 100% disabled NC vets? 

4. Do you support exemption of military retirement pay from state income taxes for all NC veterans, with no regard as to when they start that military retirement pay? 

5. Do you support free tuition at a public university or community college to any dependent of an NC veteran killed in the combat zone?
