VA to Open Expanded Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Jacksonville, N.C.

DURHAM – Enhancing access to health care by locating outpatient clinics in close proximity to where the majority of veterans reside is a key goal for the Department of Veterans Affairs.  In keeping with that priority, the VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) and Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC) are pleased to announce the opening on Wednesday, April 16, of an expanded Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Jacksonville. The facility is located in 241 Suite B, Freedom Way Drive, Midway Park, N.C.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be conducted at the clinic site Friday, May 2nd, at 2pm.    Representative Walter B. Jones will attend.  The keynote speaker will be Mr. Daniel F. Hoffmann, Director of the VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network.

Due to a fire which occurred March 16 at the previous VA clinic site in Jacksonville, the opening of the new clinic has been accelerated.  Patients who had been seen on a temporary basis at Morehead City will now be cared for at the expanded Jacksonville site.  The initial Jacksonville CBOC was activated in February, 1999, occupying about 2,000 net usable square feet of space.  In Fiscal Year 2007, approximately 2,500 veterans received care there.

The new clinic will occupy approximately 7,300 net usable square feet of space and is designed to accommodate 3,600 veterans.  Phone number for the clinic is 910-353-6406.  Primary care hours will be 8am to 4:30pm, Monday-Friday.  General mental health services will be provided from 7:15am to 5:45pm, Monday-Friday.  Veterans experiencing acute problems after hours should seek care at the nearest emergency room.  The Jacksonville CBOC will not provide emergency care.  .

VA is leasing space for this outpatient site under a contract with building owner Marvin Trott.  Renovation of the space to VA standards was accomplished by Atlantic Construction, Inc.

Management and staffing of the expanded Jacksonville CBOC will be the responsibility of the Fayetteville VAMC. Some 12 VA staff will provide care at this new site.

Veterans currently enrolled at the Fayetteville VAMC whose medical condition and their residence location near the Jacksonville clinic warrant it will be given priority for care there.  Fayetteville VAMC will review its list of veterans currently enrolled who may benefit from assignment as a patient at the new clinic.  Fayetteville staff will inform those veterans of that option.  Other veterans who wish to receive care at the Jacksonville Clinic must register with the Fayetteville VAMC.  This may be accomplished by phone, letter, e-mail, or on-line at www.va.gov or at www.fayettevillenc.va.gov.

Referrals for specialty care to Fayetteville VA Medical Center or to other VA sites will continue as appropriate for veterans seen initially at the Jacksonville Clinic.

VISN 6 Director Hoffmann noted, “We are pleased to expand outpatient services in Jacksonville to improve access to care for our veterans residing in this area which has a long tradition of support to our military forces and to veterans.” Hoffmann continued, “We appreciate the patience and support on the part of members of Congress, Veterans Service Organizations, and our veterans during the establishment of this expanded clinic.  I know that Mr. Bruce Triplett, our Director at Fayetteville VAMC, and his great team are ready to operate this clinic in a safe, efficient, effective and compassionate manner for our veterans.”

Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC) is one of eight major facilities within VISN 6, headquartered in Durham, N.C.  During the last fiscal year, this network provided care to over 307,000 veterans across North Carolina, Virginia, and parts of West Virginia.  Since the attacks on 9/11/2001, some 24,000 of our newest veterans—those returning from duty in the Global War on Terror—have been cared for in VISN 6 facilities, including over 4,700 at Fayetteville.  This VAMC also has responsibility for an outpatient clinic in Wilmington and will soon open a new clinic in Hamlet.

In addition to the Hamlet site, VISN 6 will open new outpatient clinics in Franklin and Hickory and in Lynchburg, Va. this year.  In August, 2007, VISN 6 began providing outpatient services in Virginia Beach, Va., with management by Hampton VAMC.  On April 18, 2008, VISN 6 celebrated the opening of a new clinic in Charlottesville, Va., staffed and managed by the Richmond VAMC.

Questions specifically about the Jacksonville Clinic may be referred to Mr. James Belmont at 910-488-2120, extension 17969.  Information on VISN 6 may be obtained by calling Dr. Dave Raney at 919-956-5541.
