Missing Proctor Airman Finally Found

Proctor, Vermont - July 14, 2008

Charlie and Mary Shostak were shocked to hear a message left on their answering machine.

"It's sort of a miracle," says Mary.

A miracle the Proctor couple waited for-- for nearly six and a half decades.

Investigators in France discovered two tiny artifacts that once belonged to Charlie's brother, Felix; a 1938 Proctor class ring and a dog tag bearing his name.

You see Felix's plane was shot down during World War II. His remains were never found following the fiery crash and his family never really knew what happened to him. For 64 years, the Air Force gunner was listed as missing in action.

"It was quite hard," says Charlie.

Hard especially for Charlie, who helped his single mom raise his siblings. Charlie is also a World War II vet. He returned to his home in Proctor-- his little brother did not-- until now. The ring and dog tag were unearthed at the crash site in France and presented to Charlie earlier this month, providing comfort and closure for this big brother now in his 90s.

"When you're missing in action in the war you don't know," explains Charlie. "It solved my problems a lot-- there he is... I say he's peaceful now. He's gone."

Gone but never forgotten-- and now remembered as a fallen war hero by his country and his family.
