Mtn Grove VFW attends Two Veterans Day Ceremonies

Mountain Grove Post 3770 split the troops today and attended two Veterans Day Ceremonies. The first was at Mountain Grove High School and began at 9:00 a. m.

    The above photos are before the ceremony began, speakers during the ceremony and at the conclusion.
    The speakers were Bridget Williams, Superintendent; Jack Holland, Pres. Ministerial Alliance; Marcia Stumpff, High School Principal; Missy Glenn, Elementary School Principal; J.T. Hale, Middle School Principal; Specialist Carl Lindell; Lt Col. Lee Beamon, USMC Ret. JROTC; Tony Dugger, State Representative 144th District and Colonel Charles Williams, Garrison Commander, Fort Leonard Wood. Songs were by the Mtn Grove High School Choir.

    The second Veterans Day Ceremony was held at Norwood High School and it started at 10:00 a. m.

The Ceremony began with the 4th grade class singing "For Us This Morning", followed by the "Pledge of Allegiance" "National Anthem" and posting of the colors by the Mtn Grove VFW. Norwood FFA then gave a flag folding presentation with an explanation about the meaning of the folds. A poem was recited by Kat Janes and then an American Tribute arrangement by John Moss performed by the Norwood High School Band. VFW representative Iris Joe Kelley was introduced and spoke to the assembled veterans, guests and students about the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen programs of the VFW. He then presented the Voice of Democracy awards to the winning students from Norwood. 3rd place - Jordan Cottengim, 2nd place Kourtney Turner and 1st place Ryan Forrest who then presented his award winning audio essay. Brianna Cudworth presented the Missing Man White Table and explained the signifigance of each item on the table followed by the High School Band playing a medley of the five branches of the military songs while veterans stood for their part of the medley. The origin of "Taps" was given by Lincoln Connell followed by the playing of taps. The Colors were then retired.
After the ceremony escorts were assigned to the veterans who given a tour of the school and then enjoyed snacks in the FACS room. Many veterans stayed and enjoyed the snacks provided.

Bingo at Mtn Grove VFW

Mountain Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3770 hosted it's regular bingo session on November 5, 2009 and had 98 players. Cash prizes of $5178.25 were paid out during the 23 game session. Four DownLine Derby Horse Races were run and all seemed to enjoy themselves. The photos below tell the story.

Players are lined up purchasing paper for the "Progressive Diamond" game and the Nightcap game during the half-time intermission.

Mtn Grove VFW Celebrates 30th Anniversary

    Saturday, October 31, 2009 was the day the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3770 located in Mtn Grove, Mo chose to celebrate it's 30th Anniversary. The post was chartered on November 2, 1979. The celebration was scheduled to begin at 12 noon and several members arrived around 9:00 for the preparations. The caterers; Burger Barn of Mansfield, MO; that were serving the meal arrived around 10:00. The first photo below is the caterers hard at work.

    Burger Barn had a unique way of preparing this eye-appealing dessert. They set the cupcakes up in the design they wished and then iced them. Turned out so unique that no one took any until we asked if it was alright and that was after the meal was done. We then proceeded to hand them out to the children first. This was by no means the only dessert offered as Burger Barn brought a lot more dessert and the members of the Post Ladies Auxiliary brought lots of desserts also as the photo below will show.

    Department of Missouri Commander Dave Morgan was introduced. CDR Morgan wished the post well and thanked the post for the invitation to the event and for the hard work the post does for veterans, esp Comrade Ed Hawley before calling for a brief moment of silence to remember Joe Lundy, Past District Commander and Dept Sr-Vice Commander. comrade Lundy passed away shortly after taking office in June.

    Post Quartermaster Kelley and Commander Proctor then presented the "Missing Man Table" ceremony followed by:

    the introduction of Post Chaplain Edgar Medina by CDR Proctor. Chaplain Medina then presented us with words from Psalms and a prayer he prepared for this ceremony.
    The meal was then served. Below are pictures taken before,during and after the meal.

    The celebration was attended by 81 members and guests. We were blessed with 16 children in attendance who were each presented a box of crayons and choices of coloring books. Glinda Kelley, member of the Ladies Auxiliary also presented each child with a 'bag of treats' because it was Halloween. The food was great and Burger Barn may well have the opportunity to again cater our next meal.



    QM Kelley, with the assistance of Jenna Medina handed out door prizes to the ladies in attendance.     Daniel Medina assisted QM Kelley with handing out the door prizes for the men in attendance.

CDR Morgan visits with a guest from a VFW Post in Pennsylvania.

William Stocker is a WWII veteran that has recently moved to the area.

Mtn Grove VFW Attends West Plains "Listening Post"

    District 18 VSIO Ed Hawley, Ava Post 5993 Commander Jerry Garrison and Mountain View Post 3009 Service Officer Bill Moriarty attended a Missouri Veterans Commission "Listening Post" in West Plains on Tuesday 20 October. The presenter/moderator was Brigadier General Larry Kay, Missouri Deputy Adjutant General/Executive Director of the Missouri Veterans Commission.   Other Veterans organizations were also in attendance as well as Service Officers from the Commission. The presentation focused on service to our nations veterans with an emphasis on the facilities and resources available to support this mission.
