Several members of our Post and Ladies Auxiliary visited with Ava Victory Academy’s fourth grade class on May 1 and spoke with the students about the importance of Loyalty Day.  Students are (not in order) Nathan Bruffett, Morgan Flake, Mason Gentry, Dalton Hammon, Molly Henderson, Kinsey Thompson, Rachel Veenstra, Gracie Walker, and Allison Welch.  Pictured in the back row are fourth grade class teacher Lois McKeel, Jerry Garrison, Jim Probasco, Marianne Goodwater, Laura Findley, Pat Anderson, Etta Mecke, Irvin Reynolds, and Gene Crites.  Also there but not shown was Carol Probasco.

Loyalty Day Committee Chairman and Junior Vice Commander Carol Probasco presented a copy of the book Red, White, Blue, and Uncle Who? by Teresa Bateman to Mrs. McKeel for Ava Victory Academy’s library.  Carol also presented the class with a Loyalty Day Award Citation for its part in promoting Loyalty Day this year and patriotic educational materials for each of the students.

Also on May 1, the Post and Auxiliary presented a special Loyalty Day program for Ava Elementary School’s fourth grade class.  Members of the Honor Guard posted the Colors at the start of the program.

During the program, the patriotic coloring contest winners were announced.  The contest was open to all students in kindergarten through fourth grade at Ava Elementary School.  The winners were Tristin Lapointe (K), Alivia Ann Roberts (1st), Connor Moran (2nd), Audrey Brandon (3rd), and Caitlyn Riggs (4th).  Also shown are Marianne Goodwater, Auxiliary President, and Laura Findley.

During the program, Etta Mecke performed the POW/MIA “white table” remembrance ceremony, while Jim Probasco narrated. In photo from (left) are Honor Guard members Jim Probasco, Jerry Garrison, Irvin Reynolds, Etta Mecke, Gene Crites, and Pat Anderson.

Laura Findley read the poem “In Flanders Fields,” which reminds us all to remember fallen veterans.

Commander Pat Anderson presented the book Red, White, Blue, and Uncle Who? to Assistant Principal Bob Rogers for the school’s library.  He also presented the school with a Loyalty Day Citation for taking part in observing Loyalty Day.  At the end of the program, the fourth grade teachers were each given a bag filled with educational material for their students.  Additionally, prior to Loyalty Day, copies of the book were donated to the Ava Public Library and Mt. Zion, Plainview, and Skyline schools for their libraries.
