Plan to Observe Loyalty Day

Posted at 05:05 PM on Friday, April 25, 2008 by post5993

Loyalty Day started as a day to encourage American citizens to publicly demonstrate their loyalty to America.  In 1921, “Americanization Day” was a way for patriotic Americans to counteract Communist rallies of the day.  On May 1, 1930, thousands of  VFW members gathered in New York City’s Union Square to show their loyalty to America and to promote patriotism.  During the following years, this day became known as Loyalty Day and annual observances gained momentum in communities across the country.

In 1949, the VFW began the push towards gaining federal recognition of Loyalty Day.  Their efforts were successful when, in 1958, Congress adopted Public Law 85-529, officially proclaiming May 1 of each year as Loyalty Day.  Loyalty Day is a good time to proudly fly your American flag and to encourage family, friends, and neighbors to do the same.  There are also many other ways to show your patriotism and loyalty to America, not only on Loyalty Day but throughout the year.

In recognition of Loyalty Day, members of our Post and  Ladies Auxiliary will present a special Loyalty Day program for Ava Elementary School’s fourth grade class on Thursday, May 1. Also, the patriotic coloring contest winners for the school’s kindergarten through fourth grade will be announced during that program.  We will observe Loyalty Day with the fourth grade class at Ava Victory Academy on May 1, as well .

Almost 325 coloring pages were judged for a Loyalty Day coloring contest, which was open to all students at Ava Elementary School.  The winners will be announced on May 1 during a special Loyalty Day program we will be presenting at the school.  Judges shown, from left, are Diana Anderson, Adrain Owen, and Pat Anderson.
