June 7th Mtn Grove VFW Joint Meeting

Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 08:32 PM

by IJK

June 7th was the date of Post 3770 second annual joint meeting with our Ladies Auxiliary.  We had twenty Comrades of the Post, nine Sisters of the Ladies Auxiliary and eleven guests present for a breakfast of pancakes and sausage. The cooks, Comrades Pete Proctor and Scott Overholser did an excellent job of preparing the meal. The purpose of our annual joint meeting is to make our scheduling plans for post events for the coming year.  After I get the schedule cleaned up it will be posted here and in a link on the left for future reference.  June is sorta a dead month activity wise as school is out, the hectic Memorial Day weekend events are behind us and while the new Officers have been installed they do not assume office until the Dept Commander does later in the month. Post 3770 decided to make a joint meeting with the Ladies Auxiliary and guests an annual affair. It gives us a good chance to interact and get on the same page.  We did take care of regular business that came up though as seen in the photos below.

Tom Jennings from the National Wild Turkey Federation is shown here receiving a donation from Post Commander Allen Dodds Jr to help defray expenses towards the NWTF youth event coming up next week, June 14th in Dawson, Mo.  The event gives all youth who attend a chance to learn to shoot a bow and arrow, pellet guns and try their hand at fishing in a stocked pond, all under adult supervision.  They are also treated to a hot dog roast.

On the left is scholarship recipient Karl Tesch of Mtn Grove,MO receiving his scholarship from Post Commander Allen Dodds Jr.  Tesch will be attending Missouri University studying mechanical engineering.

These smaller photos are pictures of the Comrades, Sisters, and Guests as they await the start of the meeting.  To view these images in a larger scale.  Right click on the image with your mouse and choose "view image".

February 2,2008 Mtn Grove VFW Post 3770 Meeting

Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 02:16 PM

by IJK

Seventeen members gathered for the monthly meeting held today, Feb 2.  Sr. Vice Commander Pete Proctor conducted the meeting as Commander Allen Dodds Jr was attending the Dept of Mo Council of Administration meeting being held this weekend in Jefferson City, MO.  The meeting started promptly at 10:00 and was closed at 10:54. Although the meeting was short , it was constructive.
The cooks prepared a fine breakfast of sausage and French toast.  The cooks are shown above Jr Vice Commander Jim Sweet (L) and Sr Vice Commander Pete Proctor (R).

Lined up filling their plates are Trustee John Dodds (L) and Adjutant Darrell Kochis (R) while Jr Vice Sweet (kitchen) checks on the French toast on the griddle.
During the meeting the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved with noted changes, the Quartermasters financial and bingo reports were given, the Service Officers report was given, reports pertaining to 'old business' were given, Comrade Overholser reported on the ambitious aims of the Mtn Grove YMCA to build an indoor swimming pool and the YMCA's need to update their bus-Comrade Overholser will find out more by next meeting, Comrade Kelley started a discussion about Post 3770 possibly joining the Mtn Grove Chamber of Commerce and since some questions were raised it was tabled until Comrades Kelley and Hawley obtain the answers to those questions by the next meeting. Under "Good of the Order" Sr Vice Proctor read "Thank You"s from the St James Veterans Home and the Mtn Grove JROTC for our recent donations to those organizations, read the Dept of Mo February General Orders to the members, reminded the membership of the upcoming District 18 meeting to be held at West Plains VFW Post 1828 next Saturday, February 9th, the upcoming "Pot Luck" Dinner to be held at the Post Home on February 16 at 12 NOON, informed the members of the "Color Ceremony" to be held on the Mtn Grove Public Square on February 15th at 9:00 a. m. in commemoration of the "Sinking of the USS Maine in 1898" in Havana Harbor, Cuba which got the United Sates embroiled in its first global war, the Spanish-American War.  It was the veterans of that conflict that got the VFW started.
The next meeting of Post 3770 will be held at the Post Home at 10:00 a. m. on March 8, 2008.  Breakfast will be ready around 9:00 a.m.

It was voted on and passed at the January meeting to make a donation to the newly formed "Mtn Grove Model Railroading Association".  They were not ready for the donation then but Comrade Scott Overholser is shown accepting the donation from Sr-Vice Commander Proctor, on the MGMR Association's behalf today.

Post 3770 has a "Life Membership" drawing at the conclusion of each meeting.  A name is drawn from a can which has all members names inside.  The member must be present to win. If the first name drawn is not present then a second is drawn.  If a winner is declared and the member is an annual member then the Post will pay the appropriate Life Membership fee but if the member is already a Life Member then a small cash award is given.  Today the first name drawn was Comrade Kenneth Flinchum who is already a Life Member. Shown above is Trustee Kenneth Flinchum (L) receiving congratulations and a check from Quartermaster Kelley (R).

by IJK

Above are Comrades Jim Sweet and Pete Proctor busily preparing breakfast.  Comrade Hawley prepared the gravy at home so that Sweet and Proctor would only have to deal with baking the biscuits, frying the eggs and frying the hashbrowns.  The three of them did an excellent job.  Thank you to all three for their hard work.

Here are some of the members relaxing after eating breakfast and waiting for the meeting to begin. (Sorry about the fuzzy photo, I think I may need a new camera).
Commander Dodds started the meeting promptly at 10:00 a.m. with 24 members present.
There were 4 WWII veterans, 4 Korea War veterans, 8 Vietnam veterans, 4 Desert Storm veterans, 1 Iraqi Freedom veteran, 1 veteran of both Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, 1 veteran of Bosnia and 1 veteran of the Quemoy and Matsu Islands campaign.
The meeting was closed at 10:35 with the next meeting to be held on Jan 12, 2008.

by IJK

Reggie Sonnenschein of Mtn Grove came by and enjoyed breakfast with us before the meeting and spoke of his plan to bring the US Navy band to Mtn Grove,  MO on February 20, 2008.  Mtn Grove High School will be providing a place for the band to perform.  Here he is shown explaining all about it to the members in attendance while they were finishing breakfast.

Three Rivers Hospice South of Mtn Grove was represented by Nancy Pineiro (L) and Candi Bartsch (R) who along with Jeff Bartsch (not shown) came and partook of breakfast with us and then gave a talk explaining how Three Rivers Hospice works and how they aid the dying and the living.  It aroused a lot of interest as many questions were asked.

Following the departure of our guests we were able to start the meeting, although we were a few minutes late.  We had 21 members in attendance and four guests from Ava VFW Post 5993, Irvin Reynolds,  Jerry Garrison, Richard Stitt and Post 5993 Commander Pat Anderson, who also enjoyed breakfast with us.
Post 3770 decided to pursue donating Skyline School a new flagpole as some felt it is not tall enough to hold three flags properly.  Committee to approach Skyline School Board members with the proposition.
Post 3770 decided to have pre-Christmas "Pot Luck" dinner on December 15th at 1 p.m.  There were some donations that were voted on but I will not place the results or amount here.
Paper Newsletter will be coming out later this month with full details.  If you have an item to place in the newsletter send it to the Quartermaster.
