Hartville VFW Sponsors Boys State & Girls State
Posted at 01:26 PM on Saturday, September 19, 2009 by post3135
The Hartville VFW Post was proud to sponsor delegates to both Boys State & Girls State
Missouri Girls and Boys State delegates are students who attend high school in Missouri and have just completed their junior year. Candidates are evaluated on their leadership abilities, interest in government, service to others, and academics. Speech and debate experiences are also beneficial.
The purpose is to promote pride in America and to create a mythical state that the citizens will govern at the city, county and state level. Leaders in our Missouri government as well as those who hold important offices in our communities speak during the week.
The week long sessions are held at the University of Central Missouri campus in Warrensburg. There are approximately 1,000 boys during their session, and 750 girls during the girls session.
Citizens create a working political system with ward, city, county, and state governmental offices. This includes law enforcement, court systems, businesses, a state economy, and much more. They even have to pay taxes.
Victoria Knapp (daughter of Buster & Leanne Knapp of Grovespring ) was elected State Representative. She visited the Missouri State Capital and debated on the floor. She also attended the Law Enforcement Class, and enjoyed the talent show. She was privileged to see former Missouri Governor Bob Holden.
Zack McClanahan (son of Marsha McClanahan of Hartville) was elected City Tax Collector. He attended the Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Class, and enjoyed the sports activities (basketball & volleyball). He also saw Governor Jay Nixon.
The Law Enforcement Class gives citizens a look at the day-to-day activities of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The school is taught by members of the Patrol. Topics covered were various aspects of crime prevention and the responsibilities of a law enforcement official. Citizens were trained in arrest and trial procedures.
Both Victoria & Zack said they would encourage other students to attend Boys or Girls State.
