2012 Loyalty Day Information

Loyalty Day 2012

On May 5th, Post 1117 will host District Fourteen's 2012 Loyalty Day Program. Events will include a Poppy display competition, color guard competition, district-wide Loyalty Day coloring competition for the kids, guest speakers, and a light luncheon. All post members and friends are encouraged to help out or attend.
What is Loyalty Day?
The United States of America was founded by patriots who risked their lives to bring freedom to the nation. The nation’s founders are remembered on Loyalty Day, which is a day when people celebrate their freedom while remembering their responsibilities to continue the legacy of liberty. Loyalty Day is celebrated with parades and ceremonies in several communities across the United States. Schools, churches, and various organizations participate in these events.
Public life
Loyalty Day is an observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States. Schools, post offices, stores and other businesses and organizations are open as usual. Public transport services run to their usual schedules and no extra congestion on highways is to be expected.
Background
Loyalty Day was first observed in 1921 as "Americanization Day" to counterbalance Labor Day on May Day (May 1), celebrated in other parts of the world. On May 1, 1930, about 10,000 Veterans of Foreign War members staged a rally at New York's Union Square to promote patriotism. Through a resolution adopted in 1949, May 1 evolved into Loyalty Day. Observances began on April 28, 1950, and climaxed on May 1 when more than five million people across the nation held rallies. In New York City, more than 100,000 people rallied for America.
On July 18, 1958, the Congress designated May 1 of each year as Loyalty Day to foster loyalty and love of the country. According to the Legal Information Institute, the President is requested to issue a proclamation, calling on United States government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day, and inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places.

The Vander Clute VFW Riders, sponsored by Post 1117, recently held a NASCAR themed fundraiser at the Post.
President Signs Veterans' Jobs Bill Into Law

The VFW joined President Barack Obama and leaders in veterans' advocacy at the White House yesterday [Monday] to sign the VOW to Hire Heroes Act into law. This comprehensive piece of veterans' jobs legislation passed both houses of Congress with unanimous bipartisan support before reaching the president's desk thanks in large part to the advocacy of the VFW on the issue of veterans' unemployment.

Over the last few years, the VFW has consistently passed a resolution at the VFW National Convention calling on Congress to address the ever-growing unemployment crisis among veterans, particularly the men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. VFW then testified in support of comprehensive veterans' jobs legislation before both the House and Senate in the lead-up to the compromise bill that the president signed yesterday [Monday].

Both Republican and Democratic leaders, like House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash., joined the president, First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden at the White House to mark the bipartisan victory that will help veterans become more marketable employees in a cut-throat jobs market.

VFW Riders Illinois For God -- For Country-- For the V!

The VFW Riders program in Illinois is presently in a reorganization stage. Post 1117 has two members active in the District 14 program and I am happy to report that Post 1117 and its officers are behind the riders 100%.
Upcoming events hosted by the VFW Riders are the Firecracker Ride on July 3, 2011 and the POW Mia ride on September 11, 2011. You can find more information about the rides by zapping yourself to the Illinois VFW Riders website.

Being a VFW Rider is simple and fun! Our only requirements are that you must be an Active or Ladies/Men's Auxiliary member in good standing and own a motorcycle. The riders are NOT a club! We are a collection of individuals who happen to share a common interest in the VFW and in motorcycling.

VFW Rider meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about us. We usually meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month at a post somewhere in District 14. April's meeting will occur on April 17th at the Belleville Post 4183 at 2pm.

The VFW Riders would love to share some smooth road and sunny days with you! For more information, contact Tom "Squirts" Clark or Mike Schmittling.

Thanks for checking us out and ride safely out there!
